But since the Dutch weather loves a switch things up, knowing what to pack for Amsterdam in summer means preparing for warm sunshine and a surprise downpour all in the same afternoon.

Navigating the unpredictable weather is all about incorporating comfortable layers, supportive shoes for those cobblestone streets, and keeping a compact umbrella handy.

This post is your complete to go guide on what to pack for Amsterdam in summer to keep you looking effortlessly cool while staying comfortable, leaving you perfectly ready for whatever adventures the city throws your way!

What The local Women Wear In Amsterdam

Whenever I travel, I love to research how the locals dress. This gives me a glimpse into comfortable and practical styles perfect for the city I’ll be visiting. And I definitely did this before my trip. I had no idea what to pack for Amsterdam, especially during the summer. So I spent a good amount of time learning about the weather and fashion choices of the local women.

Amsterdam fashion is all about “effortless practicality.” And I absolutly love this because my personal style represents this too.

Locals prioritize comfort and utility. The reason for this is because almost everyone commutes by bike. You will definitely see a lot of minimalist, smart-casual outfits paired with stylish sneakers rather than high heels or clunky sandals. Think high-quality basics, relaxed-fit trousers, oversized blazers, loose fitting summer dresses, and lightweight jackets that can handle a sudden breeze or unexpected rainshower.

The overall vibe is understated, trendy, and functional, meaning you can easily blend in by skipping the flashy outfits and opting for cool, comfortable layers that transition from daytime museum hopping to a fun canal bar in the evening.

Summer Weather In Amsterdam

Summer in Amsterdam is actually delightful. From June through August, they get up to 16 hours of daylight, giving you endless time to rent a bike, cruise the canals, or lounge at a vibrant canal-side cafe.

Temperatures usually stay at a comfortable 68°F to 72°F. But some days can get warmer. You might easily start your morning at a cool 50°F and by mid afternoon enjoy a warm 85°F. So those layers are an absolute must!

Fun fact: “April doet wat hij wil” is a popular weather saying the locals have. It translates to “April does what it wants.” I went in June, but between the random rain, warm sunny days, and breezy cold days, I will go out on a whim and say it applies to June as well!

Amsterdam Summer Packing Guide

Amsterdam is a very active city and you want to prepare to do a lot of walking, possibly biking, and using public transit. This is why comfort and practicality should be top priority.

Footwear

Cole Haan | Birkenstock | Sam Edelman | Sketchers

Amsterdam’s city center is paved with uneven, old cobblestones streets, and tram tracks. So a good pair of comfortable walking shoes will go a long way.

Local women often opt for stylish white sneakers. Good classic options like Cole Haan, Sam Edelman, New Balance, or Sketchers are great brands to consider. And they pair perfectly with everything from summer dresses to casual jeans.

Flimsy flip-flops and sandals with hard thin soles are a bad idea. They offer zero support for walking along the canals and aren’t good options if you want to experience how active the city can be. If you want a dressier option, go for a chunky leather sandal, a sleek loafer, or a low block heel that will keep your feet happy and blister-free.

Accessories

Keep accessories to a minimum. Don’t wear pieces that will get in your way or become uncomfortable after a few hours. I would go as far as to say leave the jewelry at home. But if you must wear it, opt for small hoop earrings or studs, and a light weight necklace or bracelet.

For bags, choose a crossbody or sling bag with a secure zipper. These keep your hands free and offer enough room for all your essentials.

Amsterdam Packing List

This packing list is based on a 5-7 day trip to Amsterdam. You can adjust the quantity of items you bring based on if you’ll be in Amsterdam longer or shorter than 7 days.

👟 Footwear (Cobblestone-Approved)

  • 1 pair of comfortable sneakers
  • 1 pair of chunky leather sandals
  • 5-6 pairs of blister-proof socks

🕶️ Essential Accessories

  • 1 Secure crossbody bag with zippers
  • 1 pair of UV-protection sunglasses
  • 1 Compact umbrella (optional if you have a multipurpose jacket)
  • 1 Reusable water bottle (tap water is excellent here)
  • 1 foldable sunhat (a complete lifesaver while boating through the canals)
  • 1 bottle of Sunscreen

👗 Wardrobe

  • 2-3 Lightweight summer dresses
  • 1-2 pair of lightweight relaxed jeans, linen trousers, or shorts
  • 4-5 breathable tops/t-shirts. (lightweight long-sleeve shirts are a great addition to your outfits. They will prevent direct sunlight from hitting your arms and shoulders which helps keep you cool, but will also help with not getting cold when the temperature drops in the evenings.)
  • 1 Lightweight multipurpose jacket. (A waterproof jacket with a hood will serve two purposes. First, it will keep you warm during the mornings and evenings. Second, it will keep you dry when it rains. The hood will prevent you from having to pack or carry an umbrella around.)
  • 1-2 swimsuits if you intend to swim in the canals or go to the hotel pool

🔌 Electronics & Essentials

  • Type C/F European travel adapter
  • Portable power bank to charge your phone and other electronics
  • Digital copies of travel insurance and passport

Outfit Inspiration

One thing is for sure, you’ll need a different outfit for every occasion when visiting Amsterdam. So I decided to put together some outfit inspiration to help you pack the perfect wardrobe for your trip!

Exploring The City

Lightweight Top | Shorts | Sneakers | Sling bag

From boating through the canals to exploring Vondelpark, a day spent within the city only requires a lightweight outfit that will keep you comfortable and of course, stylish too. You don’t need to dress in many layers, as you’ll be in the city and can easily get back to your hotel if needed.

Exploring Outside the City

Jeans | T-shirt | Jacket | Slingbag | Sneakers | Sunhat

Amsterdam has a ton of surrounding sites and neighborhoods to visit. Things like visiting a cheese and clog making factory, seeing the windmills, or spending a day at one of the beautiful dutch neighborhoods can easily take you outside the Amsterdam city centre. This also means a quick trip back to the hotel isn’t easy or even possible if you are with a tour company for the day.

So you’ll definitely want to wear a couple layers along with a jacket to be prepared for unexpected weather conditions.

Why Layers Are So Important

I spent the day visiting 2 neighborhoods, Giethoorn (a beautiful neighborhood on water) and Zaanse Schans to see the windmills. It was much cooler so I was happy to have a jacket with me that day.

But…

Remember earlier in this post when I listed you should pack a practical multipurpose jacket? This is because I did pack a jacket, but it was more of a cute jacket than practical.

After I visited Zaanse Schans and Giethoorn, I became sick. My sinuses were messed up, and I had a scratchy throat. This usually happens when I’m exposed to cold, rainy weather without the proper attire. And the jacket I packed was not extremely useful for the cold, rainy, and windy weather we experienced that day. Lucky for me, I only had one day left, so this didn’t ruin my trip entirely, but it is important to keep practicality in mind when packing.

Adventurous Bike Ride

Leggings | Active Top | Jacket | Athletic Shoes | Cap | Belt bag

I took a very ambitious 25-mile bike ride through the Dutch countryside. Bikes are the main form of transportation in Amsterdam, so you will most likely find yourself on one sometime during your trip if you are feeling a bit adventurous.

But if you plan to do a bike tour, you’ll want to wear your athletic gear. As I learned the hard way, the Dutch are serious about their bikes, and that bike ride was no joke!

That one bike ride exposed me to heat, rain, and very strong wind. So be prepared with your best athletic gear that will keep you picture ready but also comfortable.

Visiting Museums

Cute summer outfit to wear in Amsterdam.

Summer dress | Button down | Sling bag | Sneakers

Amsterdam has a wide variety of museums to visit. This will most likely be a chill experience. So dress comfortably and be prepared for a lot of walking and moving around. But it’s also your chance to bring out one of your pretty summer dresses.

I added button-downs to my dresses and tied them in the front. The long sleeves really helped keep my arms cool and from being exposed to direct sunlight.

Summer Packing Tips For Amsterdam

I wanted to list some general European summer packing rules I always follow and included in my packing strategy when I went to Amsterdam.

  1. Pack lightweight breathable fabrics. Best fabrics are cotton, linen or linen blends, and rayon. You also want to ensure you are wearing comfortable breathable undergarments. Avoid fabrics such as polyester and nylon as they not breathable and can make you sweat even more while out.
  2. Avoid jumpsuits and rompers because they can be a absolute nightmare in those small european public restrooms.
  3. Avoid pants that drag or touch the ground. They will get extremely dirty.
  4. Keep jewelry to a minimum and never pack valuable items that will break your heart if it got lost or stolen. (and don’t think it won’t happen to you.)
  5. When wearing dresses, it’s a good idea to wear a pair of biker shorts or slip shorts underneath. This will help prevent chafing (because hot weather, sweat, and thighs rubbing together are never a good combo, and yes this very thing happened to me in Amsterdam lol). This will also add a layer of protection if you are wearing a shorter dress that could be easily swept up by the wind!
