Did you know Vatican City has a dress code?
If you’re unfamiliar with it, you’re in luck because I’m sharing 7 Essential Dress Code Tips When Visiting Vatican City. These tips ensure you are dressed appropriately and granted entry into the Vatican Museums and St Peter’s Basilica.
The Vatican Dress Code
The Vatican has a strict dress code for visitors entering the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. This dress code is essential because the Vatican is the heart of the Roman Catholic Church, a sovereign city-state, and a significant international religious site. These spaces are sacred, and preserving the atmosphere is part of why the dress code exists. Even if you’re not Catholic or a person of faith, following the dress code is essential to show respect to church members and other visitors.
7 Essential Dress Code Tips When Visiting Vatican City
1. Avoid sleeveless tops, low-cut garments, shorts, and miniskirts. Shoulders and knees should be covered. This includes both men and women.
2. Hats and caps should be removed before entry.
3. Tattoos should be covered, and visible facial piercings removed if possible.
4. Avoid clothing with potentially offensive language and/or symbols.
5. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes. Try to avoid wearing sandals or flip flops.
6. Avoid wearing ripped jeans as these jeans can show extra skin on the legs.
7. Avoid wearing tight or form-fitted clothing as this can give an overly sexual appearance.
Do They Enforce The Vatican Dress Code?
You can be denied entry if you aren’t dressed appropriately. I didn’t see anyone who wasn’t able to enter. However, shawls and scarves are readily available from street vendors and souvenir shops nearby. This method allows people to comply with the dress code.
My advice is to go prepared and follow the dress code. It is vital to the church members that the dress code is followed. I quickly learned this when I briefly removed my blazer while waiting outside to go inside St. Peter’s Basilica. I forgot to put it back on before entering, and one of the staff members pointed me out and gestured for me to put it back on because my shoulders weren’t covered. So, in answer to this question, yes, they enforce the dress code.
