Today, I’m sharing my 6 must-know secrets for enjoying sightseeing as a solo traveler. These 6 tips will help you get the most out of your solo adventures despite being alone.
Solo Sightseeing
Even though I am a solo traveler for the most part, I understand the importance of community, which is part of what makes travel fun and exciting. When we have travel partners, this is easy. Not only do we have that person, but we are also often more willing to discuss our thoughts with others when we’re not alone.
Today’s tips will challenge you to step out of the box and interact with the strangers and environment around you. This is what makes solo travel beautiful and challenging. So, despite being “solo,” embracing and being a part of the culture and conversations around you is essential. You don’t have to be everybody’s best friend, but be a part of the environment around you.
Solo Traveler Secrets: How To Enjoy Sightseeing As A Solo Traveler (6 must-know tips)

1. Don’t Overplan
If you are new to solo travel, you’ll likely feel the need to overplan. However, one of the best things about solo travel is that there is no one else to consider. You don’t have to have every detail of your trip planned out. It is essential to prebook things you absolutely want to do, but give yourself a few free days to explore things you discover while at your destination.
If I’m going on a 6 day trip, I generally take three days to plan what I want to do. I leave the other two to three days free to explore, see the city, and experience the culture. This free time is perfect for doing on-the-spot activities, like visiting a cool museum you noticed on a tour or shopping and souvenir hunting.
An example of this is when I visited Amsterdam. I knew I wanted to take a canal cruise, but I hadn’t planned when I would do one. There were many canal cruise options, and you could book them within 15 minutes of the start time—as long as they weren’t full.
The takeaway is to make the most of your schedule and allow time for spontaneous activities you’d like to do throughout the city.
2. Book With A Tour Group
Tour groups are great for solo travelers. They can enhance the travel experience by allowing you to easily interact with other tourists, some of whom may also be solo travelers. This gives you a sense of community and belonging while also allowing you to be solo and explore certain things on your own.
You might be thinking, “I’m traveling solo and don’t want to be bothered by other people.”
You should know that sightseeing with a tour group won’t interfere with your solo travels. But I’m going to be honest, just because you are alone doesn’t mean you want to feel lonely. Tour groups offer a perfect balance of community and solo travel.
Sightseeing with a tour group also has its perks for solo travelers. Many people in tour groups take pictures for one another (which, you know, is a struggle for solo travelers), chat about the best places to eat or get ice cream, or, in my case, give you 1 euro in cash to use the restroom!
3. Take Day Trips
Day trips are similar to tour groups, except you’ll most likely be sightseeing outside the city. They’re also great because you can explore different areas of the country you’re visiting. Some day trips are to nearby countries, which gives you more opportunities to visit places on your list.
Due to drive times, many day trips require a full day, often with multiple stops at various towns and sights. The tour company will typically provide transportation, tickets to select attractions, and insider information from the tour guide about the area and the best ways to explore.
They also provide the same feeling of community as tour groups. You have a group of people who help create a fun environment, which allows you to enjoy your solo travels.
4. Don’t Spend All Your Time Taking Pictures
We see some interesting and exciting things when sightseeing, and it’s natural to want to capture them in a photo. But taking time and being in the moment is essential. Spending all your time taking pictures of everything instead of enjoying it takes away from the beauty of the thing you’re photographing.
My advice is to spend more time looking at and admiring what you want to photograph and then take a few moments to snap a picture. And remember, you don’t have to take a picture of everything you see. Allow some things to live in your memory, and you can still share them with friends, family, or other travelers through stories. And if you do want a picture reference, there is always Google. I’m sure there is a picture of almost anything you would like to see on Google.
5. Plan An Unexpected Adventure
One of my favorite things to do when traveling solo is to do something a bit unexpected. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, but something unusual for you that might be fun.
I booked a 25-mile bike ride through the Dutch countryside on a recent trip to Amsterdam. Honestly, I had never ridden a bike that far, so it was a bit of a workout for me, but it was worth it. I chose a bike ride because I love to be active and thought it’d be a fun way to spend the morning.
Travel brings a lot of growth and discovery. To get the most out of these experiences, we have to be open to new ideas. And that often means stepping out of your comfort zone a little and doing something that you usually wouldn’t do.
When planning your unexpected adventure, try to be open-minded and explore the options available at your destination. You don’t have to pick something completely left field. Just choose something you usually wouldn’t do. This could be as simple as eating at a restaurant you wouldn’t usually choose, or as adventurous as taking a Segway tour through the city (which I’ve done!). You never know what you’ll discover. You might hate it, or you might love it!
6. Leave The Earphones At The Hotel
As a solo traveler, you might be tempted to bring your headphones while sightseeing. Since you are alone, you might want to listen to something while getting to your meeting spot or exploring a sight. But take it from me: Leave them in your hotel room.
Be present and in the moment. Don’t try to distract yourself. Take the time to appreciate the sights, embrace the environment, and connect with the people around you. When you do this, you’ll notice all the different people and cultures around you. You’ll hear all the different languages spoken, see various families, and other solo travelers. Allow yourself to be a part of all that’s going on around you.
